No more playing the violin

No More Playing the Violin is a short story about John Fern, a dedicated musician and piano tuner who is trying to learn to live with his hearing problems. He does not suffer from deafness but from ringing in his ears, over-sensitivity and sound distortion. These problems make working in the music sector almost impossible. Concentration loss and lack of energy make him despair. He vainly looks for help.

Hans Troost wrote the story to highlight what takes place behind the scenes in the music world. Commercial and technical developments have led to a trend towards increasing volume. iPods, cinemas, bars and many musical instruments are now so loud that prolonged exposure to them can damage the hearing of musicians and audiences.
